The FCC is Banning Non-US Commercial Routers (And What It Means for Your Business)

Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding out that your company's fleet of delivery vehicles is no longer street legal, and you are forced to replace them all using only one specific, notoriously unreliable manufacturer.

Recently, the FCC handed down a new policy effectively banning all commercial routers made outside of the US. Take a breath. You don't need to panic buy a new router today. Here is how we are handling this shift, and what you actually need to do:

• Don't rip and replace just yet - Unless you receive a direct compliance notice stating your current hardware must be disconnected immediately, your existing network will continue to function. The immediate impact is on the procurement of new hardware. We are closely monitoring the timeline for when existing, non-US routers will officially need to be sunsetted and pulled offline.
• Audit your network closet - You can't plan a budget if you don't know what you are replacing. The next step is simply figuring out exactly what hardware you currently have running your network. If you are one of our managed IT clients, we already have this inventory on file. If you manage your own IT, you need to document the make, model, and age of your core networking equipment.
• Expect disruptions in the supply chain - Since every business in the country is now pulling from the same heavily restricted pool of approved hardware, expect backorders and delays. If you were planning a major office expansion, a move, or a network upgrade later this year, we need to start sourcing that equipment right now.
